How to test Skincare: Patchtesting
How to Test Skincare Products Safely
Trying new skincare products is exciting, but it’s important to test them properly to avoid irritation or breakouts. Your skin is unique, and what works for one person might not work for you. Here’s how to safely test skincare products and find your perfect match.
1. Patch Test First
Before applying a new product all over your face, do a patch test:
Apply a small amount of the product to a discrete area, like your inner wrist or behind your ear or your neck if you're brave.
Wait 24-48 hours to check for any redness, irritation, or itching.
Need some product to test? Ask most pharmacies or ‘beauty’ stores will make you sample if you ask or they might have some from the company. Always ask, test the product, then buy if it doesn't irritate and you decide you want it.
2. Introduce Products Gradually
Don’t overwhelm your skin by adding multiple new products at once. Test one product at a time for at least a week to monitor its effects. This approach makes it easier to identify any products that might irritate you and even help narrow down any specific ingredients too! If you have a bad reaction to alot of products and you see they all contain zinc, or another chemical additive that might be a good sign it’s that.
You also need to be doing this with the products you already own.
4. Be Patient
Skincare results take time. Products like moisturizers may show immediate effects, but actives like retinoids or vitamin C could take weeks to reveal improvements. Consistency is key.
5. Know Your Skin Type
Choose products formulated for your skin type—whether it’s oily, dry, sensitive, or combination. Using the wrong formulation can exacerbate skin issues.
